Compare and Contrast Character
The compare and the contrast between Taylor and Lou Ann are different and similar through out the novel The Bean Trees. In the novel the author first describes Taylor Greer. Taylor Greer is the first character that Barbara Kinsolver introduce us to. The character of Taylor is self-owned, determined and a rebel. Even though Taylor a young girl she has her life set. She know the goals and the life she wants for herself. She feels like the life she wants is where she at so she ventures out. She end up going from Kentucky to Oklahoma after her car breaks down. She doesn't know that her life is about to change that very moment. She is truly about to be put to a test of how her life ends. One thing that Taylor wants to stay away from is pregnancy and becoming a mother, so she avoids the obstacles of that. After arriving in Oklahoma is given a little indian girl to provide and care for. Taylor has no idea how to care for the child so then she seeks help. The next character is Lou Ann, she another self-proclaimed individual that has a different life. The author introductes Lou Ann as a married women and soon to be mother. She has to endure all of the obstacles a pregnant women shouldnt have to face. Unlike Taylor we would think that Lou Ann has some kind of guidance and help from her husband and her own family. She also as to be determine to seek help and the motivation she needs for her child. This essay will explained the difference and the similarity between these two women.
Taylor Greer is the protagonist of the novel. As we know Taylor real name is Marietta Greer. She is very different from most women in this society. She may be young but she also determined. She know what she want in life. Taylor has a different outlook on life. She not ready to have life most women want to have. She doesnt want to get married and have a family. She wants to be her own person. But, for Taylor to be her own person she has to leave home and seek the world for herself. She leaves Kentucky and land in Oklahoma after her car breaks down. There she is given a little girl from the tribal people of Oklahoma. Even though Taylor has no idea how to care for a child she gets in her car and her and the child ends up in Tucson, Arizona. In Arizona Taylor has to figure out how to take care of herself and the child. She has to seek finding a job and a home for her and the baby. Her hold agenda changes from the beginning of the story. She stated that she never wanted children and she didnt want to get married. But after having Turtle for awhile it changes. She grows to love Turtle and support her through the changes Turtle has faced as a young child. Taylor then decides that she wants the best life for Turtle so she seeks to make that happen. Eventually, Taylor meets Lou Ann the opposites of Taylor. Lou Ann is shy, soft-spoken and she worries about everything. Lou Ann is pregnant and was a married women. She ends being pregnant and separated from her husbands after he decides that his depression is going to take over his life. If not being pregnant is hard enough Lou Ann has to deal with her family, paying the bills and becoming a single mother. She decides that she need a change and some help. She meets taylor and they decides to become roommates. Dawayne Ray is born and Taylor and Turtle are welcome into the Ruiz house.
Both Taylor and Lou Ann are different because ones a rebel and the other is a nervous rack. Taylor is a rebel basically of what she had to deal with back at home with her family. She had to learn to protect herself during high school. She had to learn to make goals for herself because she didnt want end up like most girls back home. She didnt let low self-eestem define who she was. She made her life something that she wanted to fight for and she even has to fight for Turtle life. Turtle has been through so much and all Taylor can give her is support and love. Taylor doesnt know how to give love to Turtle so she has to learn from Lou Ann. Lou Ann is different from Taylor she was married and she gave brith to her son. Even though her husband walked out on her she still have to love her son. Lou Ann has to make the best decision for her and her son, so she need some help. With Angel walking out on her she needs to be strong like Taylor to live through this society. In the book society descides family as husband and wife with the child. Taylor and Lou Ann describe their own family which is two women raising their children together.
I see at the middle and the end of the book Taylor and Lou Ann switches character. There comes a difficult part of Taylor life dealing with loosing Turtle, and we see her doubt herself just like Lou Ann does. We see Lou Ann try to become the stronger person for Taylor. I feel like with the changes that happened with both character the author needs to do a part two of the book.I really enjoyed reading this book.
