When you are a mother, you are never really alone in your thoughts. A mother always has to think twice, once for herself and once for her child. Sophia Loren

The woman in the novel are ordinary, descent women. Their concerns, similar to those of most single women, how to surive on very little income, how to keep their children clothed, and fed, and how to keep a job and care for their children at the same time. The women in the novel survive with each other help. All the women in the novel with children are single mothers. Motherhood is the most important aspect of their lives. Although the women have little to offer their children materially, they offer them things that count, such as love, a family, security, and stability. As Taylor tells Turtle, " You already know therre's no such thing as promises. But I'll try as hard as I can to stay with you".

Esperanza is able to come to terms with the loss of Ismene when she has the opportunity to symbolically give up turtle and say good bye.. If Taylor hadn't had Esperanza's support she might have lost Turtle to the state.Taylor had blamed her self for what happen to Turtle in the park, and feels inadequate as a parent.Mothers can only do their best to keep their children safe, nobody can protect their child from the world. The relationship between the two women is similar to the relationship between the rhizobia and the wisteria vines, because there is a steady give and take. Like the wisteria vines, the women flourish. Lou Ann who is very protective of her son Dwayne Ray, tries her best to be the prefect mother. Taylor, who was adamant about not wanting to be" barefoot and pregrant," willingly takes care of Turtle and loves her as though she is her natural born child. Lou Ann's husband left her, and it really didn't matter if he was not around. The women quickly learn the benefits of knowing their neighbors and developing a community. Taylor and Turtle rent a room at a hotel. Soon Taylor ends up spending all her money and has to find a job to support her and Turtle. Soon she finds herself in a situation familiar to other single mothers, wondering how she is going to take care of Turtle and provide daycare.

Taylor ends up moving in with Lou Ann, neither can afford much, by sharing expenses, they help each other survive. Lou Ann considers Taylor and Turtle family, because they have been through some hard times together, and they know each other good and bad sides that no one else knows. Other families include Edna and Virgie May. Edna is blind so she depends on Virgie May. They support and care for one another. Mattie runs a house full of refugees. She loves the people that are in her house. She risks her life for them time and time again. The way she cares for these refugees is no different then biological family doing for their family members. Taylor discovers a new awareness within herself. There is no such thing as a "perfect" family, the families that she has been part of, first with her mother and now with an extended nontraditional family, they might not be picture perfect, but they provide the emotional support that she needs to live a successful life.

Taylor makes a commitment to Turtle and knowledges that she will fight for her no matter what. When Taylor, Turtle, Estevan, and Esperanza leave Armistead office, Taylor thinks of how the group is now a new community of friends and family. Taylor feels proud as she tells her mother she adopted Turtle. She is now a proud mother. Without this network of friends and family, Taylor would not be the more mature, nurturing woman she has become. Taylor now accepts the notion that she, Turtle, Lou Ann, and Dwayne Ray are now a family.

Family and motherhood are very important in this novel. A healthy family is very important for every human being. People of one family usually share the place they live in, they share their surnames. Family is very important to people as it is the basic tool that shapes you as a person. If a person has seen a secure family life with lots of love and affection, he or she will be more aggressive and positively driven towards life. Family is the most important social unit in most of the countries in the world. Evey culture promotes the importances of family. These people, our family members, add meaning to our lives. Every country tries to promote the concept of a strong family. The importance of family in today's world has increased.People living in different countries now understand it much better that there are alot of benefits and good things attached to a sound family.

Motherhood is also important, The vital importance of mother needs no confirmation. The very existence of each of us and any progess we have made toward physical or emotional maturity testifies to the essential nature of motherhood. The mother often creates the environment and teaches the standards and values that ultimately determine a child's personality and character traits. So it is appropriate that we focus upon the the importance and purpose of motherhood. In motherhood we see the primary principle and purpose of life.

Families are like fudge-mostly sweet with a few nuts. Author Unknown.
